How to edit the text of a PDF

  1. Press Choose a PDF file and pick your PDF, or drop it on the box. It opens on your own device in a few seconds.
  2. With Edit text on, every line of text is marked when you point at it. Click a line and type: the old words are covered and your new words take their place, in the same size and colour.
  3. Use Add text to click anywhere on a page and type something new, and White-out to drag a box over anything you want hidden.
  4. Change the size, bold, italic or colour of the words you are typing with the buttons at the top. Delete takes a change away and brings the old words back.
  5. Press Download PDF. You get your own file, named “(edited)”, with only your changes made to it.

Your PDF stays your PDF

Many free “PDF editors” turn your file into pictures or into a new document and give you back something that only looks like it. This one does not. Your PDF is changed in place: every page you did not touch is left exactly as it was, text stays text that can be selected and searched, and links, form fields and pictures are kept. Only the lines you change are covered with the colour of the paper behind them and written again.

New words are written in a standard font of the same kind as the old ones — Helvetica for sans-serif text such as Arial and Calibri, Times for serif text, Courier for typewriter text — at the same size, weight and colour, so a changed line sits in with the rest of the page.

Edit PDFs in any language

Text in English and other languages written with Latin, Greek or Cyrillic letters is saved as real text. Writing that a PDF cannot set without help — Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Bengali, Chinese and others — is saved as a sharp picture of the line, so it looks right in every PDF reader on every device.

Private by design

The PDF is read and saved by your browser. It is not sent to any server, so nobody else ever sees it — useful for contracts, bank papers, certificates and anything else that is nobody else’s business. Once the page has loaded, editing even works without an internet connection.

Questions

Questions and answers

Is this PDF editor really free?

Yes. There is no paid plan, no limit on the number of files and no watermark on what you download.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened and saved by your own browser, on your own device. Urdulik has no server that receives it.

Will the rest of my PDF change?

No. Only the lines you edit are covered and written again. Every other page, picture, link and line of text is kept exactly as it was in your file.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

A scan is a picture of a page, so it holds no text to click. You can still type on it with Add text and cover parts of it with White-out.

Which font are my new words written in?

The standard font of the same kind as the old words — Helvetica, Times or Courier — in the same size, weight and colour. They have the same letter widths as Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New.

Can I change Urdu, Arabic or Hindi text in a PDF?

Yes. Click the line and type. Because PDF files cannot shape these scripts without help, the new line is saved as a sharp picture, so it looks the same in every reader.

My PDF has a password. Can I edit it?

Open it in your PDF reader with the password, save or print an unlocked copy as a PDF, and choose that copy here.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in the browser on Android phones, iPhones, tablets and computers. On a phone, tap a line to change it.
