How to Write Urdu in MS Word
Two ways to get an Urdu document in Word: set up Windows and Word for Urdu, or write it online in Nastaliq and download a ready .docx file.

The quick way: write online, download for Word
- Open the Urdulik editor and type with the phonetic Urdu keyboard.
- Format it with headings, bold text, tables and alignment.
- Download it as a Word (.docx) file from the File tab, or copy with formatting and paste into Word.
Nothing has to be installed and the right-to-left direction is already set. If the other computer doesn’t have Jameel Noori Nastaleeq, Word shows a different font, so for printing exactly as written download a PDF as well.

Add the Urdu keyboard in Windows
- Open Settings › Time & language › Language & region.
- Choose Add a language, search for Urdu and add it.
- Switch between English and Urdu with Windows + Space or the language button on the taskbar.
Windows’ own Urdu keyboard is not phonetic, so its keys don’t match the sounds of the English letters. Many people find it easier to type in a phonetic online keyboard and paste the text.
Set Jameel Noori Nastaleeq in Word
- Install the Jameel Noori Nastaleeq font on the computer (right-click the font file › Install).
- In Word, select the Urdu text and choose Jameel Noori Nastaleeq from the font list.
- Press Ctrl + Right Shift to make the paragraph right-to-left, and align it to the right.
- Increase the line spacing to 1.5 or more, because Nastaliq is tall and lines can overlap.
Common problems
- Letters come out separated: the text was copied from InPage. Convert it with InPage to Unicode first.
- Full stops and brackets jump to the wrong side: the paragraph is left-to-right. Make it right-to-left.
- The font changes on another computer: that computer doesn’t have the font. Send a PDF.
