How to use an Urdu font

  1. Open the editor and type or paste your text.
  2. Choose a font from the font list on the Home tab. Select part of the text to change only that part.
  3. Set the size, line spacing and colour, then print, save as PDF or Word, or download a picture.

Why Nastaliq matters

Urdu is traditionally written in Nastaliq, the flowing, sloping script of books and newspapers. Many apps and websites fall back to plain Naskh because Nastaliq fonts are large and hard to render well. Urdulik ships Jameel Noori Nastaleeq with the editor, so your writing looks the way Urdu readers expect — on any device, even one that has no Urdu font installed.

Fonts on posters

In the poster maker every text box has its own font, weight, outline, shadow and colours, so a bold display face for the headline can sit beside Nastaliq for the details. Because the words stay text, they are sharp at flex-banner size.

Sharing text written in these fonts

Copying from Urdulik gives Unicode text, which shows in the reader’s own font. To keep the exact look of a font, download a picture or a PDF, or use “copy with formatting” for Word.

Questions

Questions and answers

Do I have to download or install the fonts?

No. The fonts come with the editor and load in your browser. They work even on a phone or computer with no Urdu fonts installed.

Is Jameel Noori Nastaleeq available?

Yes. Jameel Noori Nastaleeq is the default font of the editor and of the poster designer.

Can I use these fonts for printing and commercial posters?

Most fonts in the list are released under the SIL Open Font License, Mehr Nastaliq Web under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0, and Jameel Noori Nastaleeq is distributed free of charge by its makers. Check a font’s own licence if you have a special use in mind.

Will the font stay the same when I paste the text elsewhere?

Plain copied text takes the font of the app you paste into. To keep the look, download a picture or PDF, or copy with formatting for Word.

Can I mix Urdu and English fonts?

Yes. Select any part of the text and give it its own font. Seven English fonts are included for mixed designs.
