7. Transfer

The Seller has handed over the vehicle, its keys and its registration documents to the Buyer on the date of sale, and shall sign any form needed to transfer the registration. From the time of handover the Buyer is responsible for the vehicle, including insurance, taxes, fines and any liability arising from its use.

When is a vehicle bill of sale used?

When a used car, motorcycle, van or other vehicle is sold privately. It is the buyer’s proof of purchase and the seller’s proof that the vehicle — and the fines, tolls and accidents that come with it — passed to someone else on that date and time.

Signing and where it goes

Seller and buyer each keep a signed copy. The registration authority of the country usually has its own transfer form as well, which must be completed separately; this bill of sale does not replace it.

Points to get right

Copy the chassis (VIN) and engine numbers from the vehicle itself, not only from the papers, and check that they match.
Write the time of handover as well as the date, so that a fine or accident can be placed on the right side.
Note any known defects. It protects the seller from a later claim that they were hidden.
Do not hand over the vehicle until the payment has actually reached your account.

Does a bill of sale transfer the registration?

No. It records the sale between the two of you. The registration must be transferred at the registration authority, using its own form.

Does it need a notary?

Most places do not require it, but some registration offices ask for signatures to be attested. Check with the office where the vehicle is registered.
