When is a child travel consent letter used?

When a child travels abroad with only one parent, with grandparents or other relatives, with a school or alone. Border officers and airlines may ask for proof that the parents agree, to prevent child abduction.

Signing and where it goes

The child or the accompanying adult carries the signed original, with copies of the parents’ passports and, where needed, the child’s birth certificate. Many countries recommend or require it to be notarised.

Points to get right

  • Use the names exactly as they are in the passports.
  • If both parents have parental responsibility, both should sign. Where one parent has sole custody, carry the court order too.
  • Some countries have their own required form for children leaving or entering. Check the rules of the countries of departure and destination.
  • Give a phone number on which the parents can be reached during the whole trip.

How to fill it in
