When is a power of attorney used?

When you need someone you trust to handle your affairs because you are abroad, unwell, elderly or simply cannot attend: running a bank account, managing or selling property, dealing with offices and courts.

Signing and where it goes

It is signed in front of witnesses and usually a notary. For use abroad, or for selling property, many countries also require it to be registered, attested by an embassy or apostilled. The attorney shows the original to banks and offices.

Points to get right

  • Give only the powers that are needed, and delete the rest. A general power gives the attorney great control.
  • Banks and land registries often have their own requirements, and some will only accept their own form. Ask them before you sign.
  • A power of attorney for selling property usually has to be registered to be accepted.
  • Keep a record of whom you have given it to, so that you can tell them if you revoke it.

How to fill it in

  1. Press Open in editor, or download the Word file to fill it in on your computer.
  2. Replace every blank line with your own details, and delete the clauses and choices that do not apply.
  3. Read it through once more as the other party would read it.
  4. In the editor, press Print / PDF to make a PDF, or Word in the File tab to save a Word file.

Before you sign

These templates are general forms written to save time, not legal advice. The law differs from country to country and changes, and a paper about property, money or employment has legal effect. Fill in every blank, delete what does not apply, check the result against the law where you are, and have an important document reviewed by a lawyer before it is signed.

Questions

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a general and a special power of attorney?

A general power lets the attorney act in many matters. A special power is limited to one task, such as selling one named property or appearing in one case.

How do I cancel a power of attorney?

Sign a written revocation, tell the attorney and every bank or office that has a copy, and where the power was registered, register the revocation too.

Is this power of attorney template free?

Yes. You can download it in Word or PDF, or fill it in online and print it, without payment or sign up, and no watermark is added.

Can I edit it online?

Yes. Press Open in editor: the template opens as an ordinary document in your browser. Fill in the blanks, change any clause, then download it as a Word file or a PDF.

Is it valid in my country?
