How to type umlauts and ß

When umlauts are missing
Writing ae, oe, ue and ss is accepted when there is no other way, but names, addresses and official letters look right only with the real letters. On a Mac, Option + U then the vowel gives an umlaut; on Windows, add the German keyboard in Settings. This page needs neither.
