When is an undertaking needed?
An undertaking is a written promise to keep certain conditions. Universities take one from students about attendance, discipline and fees; employers about service bonds and confidentiality; offices about returning equipment or completing missing documents later.
Where it goes
It is handed to the institution or employer that asked for it. Most have their own wording and will tell you whether it has to be on stamp paper and whether a parent or guarantor must sign too. If they give you wording, use theirs inside this format.
Points to get right
- Read the conditions before copying them in. You are bound by each one.
- Where an undertaking carries a penalty, such as repaying training costs on leaving early, note the amount and the period.
- A promise to submit a document later should carry a date.
- For a student under eighteen, the parent or guardian signs as well.
- Keep a copy of what you signed.

Before you sign
These are general formats to save typing. Requirements differ between offices, courts and provinces, and a paper about property or money has legal effect. Have the final wording checked by a deed writer or lawyer, use stamp paper of the correct value, and get the paper attested or registered where that is required.
