Life
Muhammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot in 1877. He studied at Murray College, Sialkot, and Government College, Lahore, where the orientalist Thomas Arnold encouraged him. Between 1905 and 1908 he studied in Europe: philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge, law at Lincoln’s Inn in London, and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Munich.
Back in Lahore he practised law, taught and wrote. He was knighted in 1922. In his address to the All-India Muslim League at Allahabad in 1930 he set out the idea of a separate homeland for the Muslims of north-west India, and in his letters he urged Muhammad Ali Jinnah to lead them. He died in Lahore in 1938, nine years before Pakistan came into being, and is buried beside the Badshahi Mosque. His birthday, 9 November, is Iqbal Day in Pakistan.
Poetry and style
Iqbal’s great theme is khudi, the self: a person who knows their own worth and strength can shape their fate. His symbol for it is the shaheen, the falcon that lives on mountain rocks, not in palaces. He wrote to wake up a people he felt had fallen asleep, and his verse speaks directly to the young.
His early poems, such as Tarana-e-Hind (سارے جہاں سے اچھا) and the children’s prayer Lab pe aati hai dua, are still sung in schools. More than half of his poetry is in Persian, through which he spoke to the wider Muslim world.
Books
