Life
Momin Khan was born in Delhi in 1800 into a family of physicians, and trained as a hakim himself. He was a man of many gifts: medicine, astrology, mathematics, chess and music. He lived in Delhi at the same time as Ghalib and Zauq, and the three are counted as the great poets of that last brilliant age of Mughal Delhi. He died in 1852 after a fall from the roof of his house.
Poetry and style
Momin’s ghazal is subtle and full of hidden meanings: what it says plainly is only half of what it means. The story goes that Ghalib, hearing «تم مرے پاس ہوتے ہو گویا، جب کوئی دوسرا نہیں ہوتا», said he would give his whole diwan for that one sher. His ghazal «وہ جو ہم میں تم میں قرار تھا» is one of the most sung in Urdu.
