Life
Muhammad Taqi was born in Agra in 1723. His father, a pious man, died when Mir was about ten, and he moved to Delhi as a young man. He lived through the worst years of the city: the invasion of Nadir Shah in 1739 and the raids of Ahmad Shah Abdali, which emptied Delhi of its poets and patrons.
In 1782 he left for Lucknow at the invitation of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, and he spent the rest of his life there, proud, poor and homesick for Delhi. He died in Lucknow in 1810.
Poetry and style
Mir’s language is plain, close to everyday speech, yet his ghazals carry a sorrow few poets have matched. Ghalib himself wrote that whoever thinks he is a master should know that there was once a Mir. His lines have the ease of conversation, which is why so many of them became proverbs.
