اردو ہے جس کا نام ہمیں جانتے ہیں داغؔ
ہندوستاں میں دھوم ہماری زباں کی ہے
نہیں کھیل اے داغؔ یاروں سے کہہ دو
کہ آتی ہے اردو زباں آتے آتے
خوب پردہ ہے کہ چلمن سے لگے بیٹھے ہیں
صاف چھپتے بھی نہیں سامنے آتے بھی نہیں
ہزاروں کام محبت میں ہیں مزے کے داغؔ
جو لوگ کچھ نہیں کرتے کمال کرتے ہیں
تمہارے خط میں نیا اک سلام کس کا تھا
نہ تھا رقیب تو آخر وہ نام کس کا تھا
ہوش و حواس و تاب و تواں داغؔ جا چکے
اب ہم بھی جانے والے ہیں سامان تو گیا
Life
Nawab Mirza Khan was born in Delhi in 1831 and grew up in the Red Fort, where his mother had married into the family of the last Mughal emperor. He learned poetry from Ustad Zauq. After 1857 he moved to Rampur, and in 1891 to Hyderabad Deccan, where he became the court poet of the Nizam, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan. He died in Hyderabad in 1905.
Dagh had more pupils than perhaps any Urdu poet. Among those who sent him their ghazals for correction was the young Muhammad Iqbal.
Poetry and style
Where Ghalib is deep and Mir is sorrowful, Dagh is lively. His ghazal is clear, witty and romantic, written in the spoken idiom of Delhi. His pride in the Urdu language itself rings through his most famous lines.
