RESIGNATION LETTER
When is a resignation letter used?
When you have decided to leave your job. Giving notice in writing fixes the date your notice period starts and your last working day, and keeps a record that you resigned in good order.
Signing and where it goes
Address it to your manager, with a copy to HR, and hand it over or send it by email. Keep a copy and note the date you sent it.
Points to get right
- Check the notice period in your contract before you write the last working day.
- Keep it short and positive. It goes on your file, and the next employer may ask for a reference.
- Do not put complaints in the letter. If there is a problem, raise it separately.
- Ask for your final pay, leave balance and the return of company property to be confirmed in writing.
How to fill it in
- Press Open in editor, or download the Word file to fill it in on your computer.
- Replace every blank line with your own details, and delete the clauses and choices that do not apply.
- Read it through once more as the other party would read it.
- In the editor, press Print / PDF to make a PDF, or Word in the File tab to save a Word file.
Before you sign
These templates are general forms written to save time, not legal advice. The law differs from country to country and changes, and a paper about property, money or employment has legal effect. Fill in every blank, delete what does not apply, check the result against the law where you are, and have an important document reviewed by a lawyer before it is signed.
Fill it in online
The template opens in the editor, ready for your details. Save it as Word or PDF.
