When is an affidavit of unmarried status needed?

Embassies, employers and marriage registrars abroad often ask for proof that a person is not married. Pakistan issues no single certificate with that title to everyone, so a sworn statement of single status is used, sometimes together with a family registration certificate from NADRA.

Where it goes

For use inside Pakistan it is given to the employer or office that asked for it. For use abroad the embassy or foreign authority normally wants it attested by a notary public and then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and sometimes by the embassy itself. Ask the receiving authority for its list before you start, because each country differs.

Points to get right

• Write the name exactly as it appears in the passport, since the paper will be read abroad.
• Some authorities want the statement from a parent or guardian as well as from the person. Check which is required.
• If you were married before, say so and state how the marriage ended. Declaring yourself never married when you are divorced or widowed is a false statement.
• An English version or a certified translation is usually needed for use abroad.

What to fill in

• The name, father’s name, CNIC number and address of the person making the statement
• The facts, each in its own numbered line
• The date, and the signature or thumb impression
• The attestation of an oath commissioner, where the office asks for it

These are general formats to save typing. Requirements differ between offices, courts and provinces, and a paper about property or money has legal effect. Have the final wording checked by a deed writer or lawyer, use stamp paper of the correct value, and get the paper attested or registered where that is required.
