When is an affidavit of financial support needed?

A student or visitor applying for a visa has to show who will pay for the stay. Where a parent, brother, sister or other relative is paying, the embassy or university asks for a sworn statement from that sponsor, promising to bear the fees, living costs and travel.

Where it goes

It is submitted with the visa or admission application, together with the sponsor’s bank statement and proof of income. The embassy looks at the two together: the affidavit is the promise, the bank statement is the proof. Some countries have their own sponsorship form, which must be used in place of a general affidavit.

Points to get right

  • State the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant clearly. Embassies give most weight to close family.
  • The amounts in the bank statement should comfortably cover what the affidavit promises.
  • Name the course or visit and its length, so it is clear what is being paid for.
  • An English version is needed for an embassy. If the paper is written in Urdu, get a certified translation.

What to fill in

  • The name, father’s name, CNIC number and address of the person making the statement
  • The facts, each in its own numbered line
  • The date, and the signature or thumb impression
  • The attestation of an oath commissioner, where the office asks for it

Before you sign

These are general formats to save typing. Requirements differ between offices, courts and provinces, and a paper about property or money has legal effect. Have the final wording checked by a deed writer or lawyer, use stamp paper of the correct value, and get the paper attested or registered where that is required.

Who can be a sponsor on an affidavit of support?

Usually a parent or close relative with the income or savings to cover the costs. Some embassies accept other sponsors but ask for more explanation.

Does an affidavit of support guarantee a visa?

No. It is one supporting paper. The embassy decides on the whole application, and the sponsor’s bank statement matters as much as the affidavit.
